Just 30 minutes from Raleigh, Jordan Lake State Recreation Area has plenty to do. There is hiking, boating, fishing, and even Bald Eagle watching around the 14,000 acre reservoir. This article is for the New Hope Overlook section of the Recreational Area.
The entire trail system at the New Hope Overlook is 5.4 miles and marked by red blazes, however, if you are looking for a shorter hike, follow the blue blazes which will take you on a shorter 2.8 miles version of the lakeside trail.
Park in the first parking lot on the way to the boat ramp off of W H Jones Road. The trail begins in the corner of the parking lot near a trail kiosk. Just 300 feet down the trail, the trail will split and loop from here.
If you hike the loop clockwise, the trail will climb a hill, cross a dirt road, then head downhill toward a cove on Jordan Lake.
The trail will wind around the lakeside for 1.2 miles before reaching the New Hope Overlook. The 300 ft trail to the overlook is well worth it for this view of the lake.
