Kindred Spirit Mailbox – Sunset Beach

Type of Adventure: Beach Walk
Distance: 1.4 miles (one way)

If you like long walks on the beach, and are in the Sunset Beach or Ocean Isle area, why not take a stroll down to this hidden gem.

I’ll let the CBS Evening News explain a little more. Watch below:

To get to the Kindred Spirit, park as far south as you can on Sunset Beach, around 40th Street and West Main Street. Take the long wooden walkway out to the ocean and make a right hand turn toward South Carolina.

You can walk or bike down the nearly 1.5 mile stretch of beach known as Bird Island. On our visit, we took our mountain bikes as it was getting late.

About a half mile before reaching the rock lined jetty at the end, keep an eye out on the right in the dunes for a flag pole, wooden bench and of course the Kindred Spirit mailbox.

If you feel so inclined, write a note or a message in one of the books in the mailbox, or sit down a read a few. You are sure to run across something interesting.

If you have time, continue on down and explore the rocks around the Little River jetty. If you make it to the rocks, you are officially in South Carolina, and on a clear day if you look close, you can see the buildings of Cherry Grove and North Myrtle Beach on the horizon.
